History of Modern Olympics - 1908

It is noticeable that each year's Olympic Games had a unique flavour with a hint of controversy, and the 1908 Olympic Games, which were held in London, were no different. Swedish and American athletes were annoyed when they noticed that their national flags were not amongst those decorating the stadium during the opening ceremony. During the march past at the opening ceremony the Finnish contingent voiced their resentment at being forced to carry the flag of Russia, as their country during those times was ruled by the Russians. Perhaps as a reaction to the non-hoisting of the US flag, the US flag bearer, Martin Sheridan, refused to dip his country's flag as he passed the Royal box and made a famous statesmanlike declaration, "This flags dips to no earthly king." Continuous inclement weather throughout the Games complemented the overall drama.
