The sport has its origins in Pune, India, the erstwhile British military cantonment town. The military officers stationed at the barracks transformed a local game into an elementary form of badminton. The game was brought to England and was further underpinned with the addition of modern badminton rules. The game can be played between two players or amongst a group of four players with two of a team on each side of a net. The net is raised at the halfway mark, which is 1.5m (five ft) wide and is 5 feet above the centre line. It is played with racquets which are used by players to hit a shuttle cock from one side of the net to the other. The specified area where the action takes place is called a court, and it is 13.4 metres (44 feet) long and 5.18m (17ft) wide. Badminton was introduced as a regular feature in the men's and women's Olympic schedule in the 1992 Barcelona Games. China has dominated the event since its inception with an aggregate of 11 gold medals.
