About Lee Valley White Water Centre

Lee Valley White Water Centre was designed by FaulknerBrowns Architects, and the landscape design done by Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates. The centre was built on an overflow car park at the River Lee Country Park, between Waltham Cross and Theobalds Grove stations. It lies just north of the A121 and has excellent transport links.

The landscape design involved the challenging task of carving out a mountain-stream environment out of a flat landscape. A system of pumps was installed to create a challenging white water course at the venue with a self-contained body of water.

The venue will feature a 300m competition course and a 100m warm-up course. The centre will also include a two-storey building with facilities such as a café, changing rooms, offices, storage and water pump/filtration facilities.

After the Games the spectator seating will be removed. However, all the other facilities at the centre will be retained, and the venue will be developed into a leisure attraction to be used for elite and intermediate white water canoe, kayak and rafting events and competitions.

Construction began in July 2009 and the venue opened in the spring of 2011.
