About ExCel London
ExCel London, an abbreviated form of Exhibition Centre London, is a stunning piece of architecture which is situated just 2.5 miles away from the London Airport. ExCel is a versatile events' venue which hosts award-winning exhibitions, conferences, product launches and sporting events. An investment of £300 million went into creating this versatile venue. Since its opening in 2000, ExCel London has already hosted 2,000 events, establishing itself as one of the most favourite venues in the UK. With an integrated IT and communications infrastructure worth £13 million and an unrivalled bandwidth over 90Mb, ExCel London can boast the most resilient and advanced venue network in Europe complete with a full range of e-services, Internet kiosks, interactive voice and data exchange, media centers, and satellite links.
The sprawling self-contained campus is spread over 100 acres and has 5 on-site hotels and a huge number of trendy bars and restaurants catering to all tastes. ExCel London comprises of three sections; namely - The Event Halls, Conference Centre and 45 break-out meeting rooms. The interiors of each of the Event Halls, are designed in such a way that visitors can enjoy every moment of action happening at the centre stage with an unrestricted view. This was made possible due to the visually attractive system of external roof hangers which enabled its designers to create vast column-free halls, providing exhibitors with maximum flexibility. These halls together have a capacity of accommodating 20000 guests. The awesome Conference Centre has three levels which offer a variety of choices and flexibility to host any kind of events. It has a capacity for hosting 400 to 1,100 delegates. 29 of the 45 Meeting Rooms offer a stunning view of the Royal Victoria Dock waterfront. The rooms which can accommodate 200 guests have dimmable house lighting and Venetian blinds, and are acoustically sealed.
There is rather an interesting anecdote, according to which the concept named ExCel was born in Malaysia and not in London. Whilst on an official visit to the new Malaysia International Exhibition and Convention Centre, Stephen Brooks, the then Association of Exhibition Organisers (AEO) chairman, is said to have mentioned London's lack of adequate "big time" modern exhibition facilities to the owner, Tan Sri Lee Kim Yew. Consequently the visionary Malaysian entrepreneur provided the initial capital and now has a 75 per cent stake in ExCel.
